Many transgender and non-binary people list their pronouns in their bios on social media to avoid being misgendered by others. Therefore the more cisgender allies declaring their pronouns, the more it normalises the practice of asking pronouns and not assuming gender. If you are cisgender, you may not see it as significant to declare your pronouns but it shows that you stand with LGBTQ+ people in making it a norm to declare your pronouns. The most commonly used pronouns are He/Him, She/Her, and They/Them. They are often used in place of a person’s name or to describe someone in a gender-neutral way. Pronouns are simply words used to let people know what you identify as. She/her pronouns identify someone who identifies as a female. Some events provide stickers and buttons where one can easily declare that their pronouns are she/her, they/them, zie/hir, he/him and so on. Because of this, many people choose to use the singular pronoun they as a gender-neutral substitute for he and. They may be non-binary, gender fluid, or something else that doesn’t fit into the gender binary. It is because they do not identify as male or female.
